Cut in troop levels in Afghanistan by late Nov: Esper

Cut in troop levels in Afghanistan by late Nov: Esper

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Trump administration plans to reduce the number of US troops in Afghanistaninfo-icon to less than 5,000 by the end of November, CNN reports.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper was quoted as saying: "We are going down to a number less than 5,000 before the end of November."

In an interview with Fox News on Saturday, the Pentagon chief said they would still need to brief Congress members on the plan.

Also, he explained, the Pentagon would have to make sure the "United States is not threatened by terrorists coming out of Afghanistan."

President Trump said last week he would like to have "probably anywhere from 4,000 to 5,000" troops in Afghanistan by the presidential election, slated for November 3.

Currently, the US has about 8,600 troops in the war-hit country, which has been struggling with violence despite the signing of a US-Talibaninfo-icon peace pact on Feb. 29.

"We are largely out of Afghanistan," Trump said in an interview with Axios that was aired on Monday.
