KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Sunday promised the release of remaining Talibaninfo-icon prisoners, a decision that will pave the ground for the start of the intra-Afghan peace talks.

The presidential announcement, clearing the final impediment to direct negotiations with the insurgents, came in response to Loya Jirgainfo-icon’s recommendation.

The tribal assembly, attended by thousands of representatives from different parts of the country, began here on Friday amidst tight security.

The attendees advised the Ghani administration to release the 400 Taliban prisoners so as to ensure the start of the intra-Afghan peace dialogue.

Under the Feb. 29 pact with the militant movement, the US had agreed to the release of 5,000 Taliban prisoners besides the phased withdrawal of American troops.

But the Afghan government refused to set free the 400 Taliban inmates, who were said to be involved in heinous crimes. The refusal hampered the long-awaited peace parleys.
