Atmar, Pontecorvo confer on Loya Jirga’s outcomes

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Haneef Atmar and NATOinfo-icon’s Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistaninfo-icon Ambassador Stefano Pontecorvo on Monday discussed reduction in violence, establishment of a humanitarian ceasefire and necessary monitoring mechanisms.

 In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs quoted Atmar as appreciating NATO’s continued cooperation and commitment to Afghanistan.

Both sides deliberated on the outcomes of the Loya Jirgainfo-icon including the release of the remaining prisoners by the government and the immediate start of peace negotiations with the Talibaninfo-icon.

The statement said both sides exchanged ideas on the need for a visible reduction in violence, the establishment of a humanitarian ceasefire and necessary monitoring mechanisms, the need to preserve the Islamic Republic and the achievements of the last 19 years.

Ambassador Pontecorvo congratulated the Afghan Government on the successful organization of the Consultative Loya Jirga.

He commended the jirgainfo-icon as an important institution of Afghan democracy, allowing the people of Afghanistan to express their views and to make an important decision removing the final hurdle for talks between the government and the Taliban.

Ambassador Pontecorvo reiterated NATO’s commitment and support to the Afghan National Security and Defense Forces (ANDSF).
