KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Direct peace parleys between the government and the Talibaninfo-icon are expected to start on Sunday (August 16).

The National Radio Television (RTA) quoted a government source as saying that the inter-Afghan negotiations would be held on Sunday.

Suhail Shaheen, Taliban’s political spokesman, said the movement was ready to enter negotiations with the Afghan government within a week if the rebel prisoners release was completed.

As part of the Feb. 29 peace agreement between the United States and the Taliban, Kabul has to free 5,000 Taliban inmates and, in return, the militant movement has released 1,000 government soldiers.

On the first day of Eidul Adah, President Ashraf Ghani suggested convening the Loya Jirgainfo-icon to decide the fate of the 400 prisoners on a Taliban list handed to his administration.

The Loya Jirga commenced on Friday and issued a resolution on Sunday, approving the release of the 400 Taliban prisoners who, the government says, are involved in high-profile attacks.

On Sunday, the president promised the release of the remaining Taliban prisoners, a decision that will pave the ground for the start of the intra-Afghan talks.

According to some source, Ghani would ink a decree for the release of the 400 Taliban prisoners today (Monday).
