NATO chief hails upcoming intra-Afghan talks

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): NATOinfo-icon Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has welcomed progress towards start of intra-Afghan peace negotiations.

The NATO chief tweeted: “I spoke to President Ashraf Ghani and Dr. Abdullah to welcome the upcoming start of intra-Afghan talks.”

All parties should seize this historic moment for peace, he said, adding NATO stood with Afghanistaninfo-icon in the fight against terrorism.

The alliance was adjusting its presence to support the peace process, Stoltenberg said, as different Afghan factions are getting ready to enter the peace dialogue. 

On Monday evening, President Ashraf Ghani signed a decree for releasing the last 400 Talibaninfo-icon prisoners as suggested by the Loya Jirgainfo-icon.

A statement from the Presidential Palace said Ghani signed the decree pardoning the jailed military personnel and those on the Taliban’s list of 5,000 people.

A day back, the National Radio Television (RTA) quoted a government source as saying the intra-Afghan negotiations were expected to begin on Sunday.

Suhail Shaheen, Taliban’s political spokesman, said the movement was ready to enter negotiations with the government within a week if the rebel prisoners’ release was completed.
