Troop levels in Afghanistan to be cut: US

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): As part of an ongoing drawdown process, the US military presence in Afghanistaninfo-icon will come down to less than 5,000 troops over the next four months, says the Pentagon.

“Over the next four months, the United States will continue to draw down its force levels in Afghanistan based on ground conditions in-country,” said the Department of Defense.

In a statement on Monday, the Pentagon confirmed the current trajectory could see the number of the US military personnel in Afghanistan below 5,000 by the end of November.

“As always, such drawdowns remain conditions-based and are implemented after consultation with Congress and in direct coordination with our NATOinfo-icon allies and partners.”

The statement came after Defense Secretary Mark Esper’s announcement of an impending troop withdrawal in line with the US-Talibaninfo-icon peace pact of Feb. 29.

“We are going down to a number less than 5,000 before the end of November,” Esper said. The Pentagon would first have to ensure the US was not threatened by terrorists coming out of Afghanistan, he explained.
