Gunmen set alight high school in Takhar

TALOQAN (Pajhwok): Unidentified gunmen torched a high school in northern Takhar province early Thursday morning, an official said.

Police spokesman Maj. Khalil Aseer told Pajhwok Afghan News unknown gunmen set on fire the Abu Usman Taloqani High School in the provincial capital at around 3:00am.

“The second floor of the school, documents and important textbooks were burnt,” he said of the predawn incident in Taloqan.

Rohullah Mohaqiq, director of public healthinfo-icon, confirmed the incident, saying about 3,000 children were enrolled in the school.

“The gunmen threatened security guards of the school -- one of the oldest in the province -- before torching it,” he added.

Nooria Nazhat, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Educationinfo-icon, told Pajhwok six classrooms and three offices were completely torched in the blaze.

She said: “We call the perpetrators of this incident the enemies of education and these people don’t want Afghan children to have a bright future.”

No individual or group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, which came days before the reopening of schools after months of closure due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
