Dozens killed, injured in Balkh truck bombing

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): More than 40 people suffered casualties in a truck bomb attack targeting a commando unit in northern Balkh province on Tuesday morning, officials said.

Police spokesman Adel Shah Adel told Pajhwok Afghan News the massive explosion took place in the main bazaar of Balkh district at around 8:00am.

He said three civilians were killed and 30 others wounded in the bombing. Further details were not immediately available.

In Kabulinfo-icon, the Ministry of Defence said the explosives-packed vehicle was detonated close to residential homes near a veterinary clinic in the district this morning.

A statement from the ministry said two civilians were killed and 14 others wounded in the attack. However, the casualties may increase.

MoD said dozens of homes were damaged as a result of the powerful blast. One commando officer was killed and six others were wounded in the attack.

Wahid Khan, a resident of the district, said windowpanes in nearby homes were shattered by the powerful explosion. He added the explosion was so powerful that it was heard far-off areas.
