KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): At least 6.1 million children under the age of five years will be vaccinated against polio in 20 provinces of the country in a campaign kicked off Monday, says the Ministry of Public Healthinfo-icon (MoPH).

Mir Jan Rasikh, MoPH head of communications for the Polio Eradication Program, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the vaccination campaign that started today would last until Friday.

He said the drive would be implemented in 20 provinces in the east, south, west, centre and northwest regions targeting 6.1 million children.

Since the coronavirus outbreaks, it was for the first time that anti-polio drive was being launched, he added.

Rasikh said since the beginning of 2020, the number of positive polio cases reached 46 in the country, with 32 cases surfacing in southern areas.

Meanwhile, MoPH in a statement quoting acting Public Health Minister Ahmad Jawad Usmani, said: “We cannot allow polio to harm our children permanently so the ministry is taking a vital step for protecting children from the disease and allowed polio vaccination campaigns to resume.”

Usmani called on all families to avoid preventing vaccination of their children because paralysis was a deadly and incurable disease.
