4,776 IEDs defused by ANA soldiers in 6 months, says MoD

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers have recovered and defused about 4,776 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) across the country over the past six months, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said on Sunday.

In a statement, MoD said the IEDs had been planted by the Talibaninfo-icon on public roads, residential areas and highways.

“While Taliban’s explosive devices inflict heavy casualties on civilians, ANDSF risk their lives to discover and defuse the bombs to protect Afghans. The IEDs also destroy roads, highways and infrastructure.” The ministry added.

Lives of thousands of civilians were saved and roads and hundreds of bridges and culverts preserved as a result of defusing the 4776 IEDs and bombs, the statement said.

“Although the indiscriminate use of IEDs is in serious violation of international law, the Taliban continue applying it as war tactics against the Afghan population.”
