MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Unidentified gunmen kidnapped head of moneychangers union in northern Balkh province on Tuesday, angering moneychangers to close their shops in protest.

Haji Abdul Qayyum was kidnapped in Mazar-i-Sharif City in the morning, said police spokesman Adel Shah Adel.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News that Haji Qayyum was on his way home from mosqueinfo-icon in Sia Gard area when he was abducted in limits of 3rd police district.

He said police had launched investigation to rescue Haji Qayyum from his kidnappers.

Meanwhile, dozens of moneychangers in Kifayat market closed their shops in reaction to the kidnapping.

Juma Khan Nazari, a moneychanger, said they faced security threats since long and Haji Qayyum was kidnapped two weeks after one of their shops was looted by robbers.

Najibullah, another moneychanger, said the local government had failed to maintain security and protect citizens.

He warned of shifting their shops elsewhere if the situation continued and urged the local administration to pay serious attention to their security.
