Taliban be forced into shunning violence: Ghani

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday said the Talibaninfo-icon must be forced into renouncing violence, declaring ceasefire and accepting that war was not a solution.

A statement from the Presidential Palace to Pajhwok Afghan News said President Ghani met with China’s special representative for Afghanistaninfo-icon Liu Jian at the Presidential Palace where Chinese Ambassador Wang Yu was also present.

Liu Jian said his country supported the ongoing intra-Afghan peace talks in Qatar and an inclusive Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process.

The envoy said the Afghan peace process has reached a crucial stage and his country supported peace efforts in Afghanistan.

He said, “China supports Afghanistan’s approach to peace, development and regional cooperation and we hope that all parties will take advantage of this opportunity of peace.”

During the meeting, President Ghani said Afghanistan’s relations with China were friendly and focused on common interests.

He hoped China’s vision for Afghanistan would be based on regional stability, economic cooperation and trade development.

He said the fight of Afghan security forces and defense forces terrorism was important for security of the region and the worldinfo-icon, therefore the vision of countries in the region about Afghanistan should be based on regional cooperation.

He said, “We want to develop relations with regional countries, especially with neighboring China particularly in area of economic cooperation.”

Ghani said the Taliban must be forced into renouncing violence, declaring ceasefire and accepting that military solution was not possible.

He described activities of foreign terrorist groups in Afghanistan as a threat to regional security, saying that hundreds of Afghans had been killed and injured since the Taliban’s February 29 agreement with the United States and that violence should end immediately.

President Ghani said regional nations should motivate the Taliban to announce truce and address the demand of people of Afghanistan and the international community in this regard.
