PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Stranded for months in Afghanistaninfo-icon, thousands of empty transit trade containers have finally been allowed to cross into Pakistaninfo-icon.

About 5,000 containers, which transported trade goods, had been stranded on the Afghan side of the Durand Lineinfo-icon, Torkham-based transporters said.

The containers had been stranded due to vehicular congestion since early March when Pakistan closed its borders with Afghanistan to contain the coronavirus spread.

According to Dawn, Pakistani traders and transporters had long been urging the Afghan government to release the stranded containers as they suffered avoidable losses.

The empty containers started to cross into Pakistan on Tuesday afternoon, with Pakistan suspending imports from Afghanistan for at least two days to facilitate the containers’ return.
