Contact groups meet but make no headway

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Contact groups involving government and Talibaninfo-icon negotiators resumed their discussions in the capital of Qatar on Wednesday.

They met for several hours in an attempt to hammer out an agreement on rules and regulations for formal negotiations, said a member of the government team.

Attaullah Ludin told a private TV channel: “An agreement has almost been reached on 18 of the disputed points. Our contact groups today continued their discussions on the two remaining items.”

However, he explained, the two sides had not yet arrived at a final agreement on these points. They are struggling to set the agenda, according to Ludin.

Khalid Noor, another member of Kabul’s negotiating team, told Tolo News they were doing all they could to make progress. Hopefully, in the coming days, we will reach an agreement on rules and regulations…”

Quoting unnamed sources in Doha, the TV channel reported there had been no progress on firming up the agenda of the talks -- another contentious issue.
