KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Uzbekistan’s president has urged the creation of a permanent UN committee on Afghanistaninfo-icon to coordinate peace efforts and facilitate a political settlement in the country.

Shavkat Mirziyoye floated the suggestion in his address to the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, said a statement from the Uzbekistan embassy in London.

In an effort to promote peace in Afghanistan, Uzbekistan had hosted a major international forum in Tashkent in March 2018, the president recalled.

The Central Asian country had invested a lot in Afghanistan’s rail and transport infrastructure, energy and educationinfo-icon sector, Mirziyoye told the UNGA.

"We consider Afghanistan an inalienable part of Central Asia. The Tashkent conference on Afghanistan in March 2018 became a new stage to consolidate global efforts to solve the Afghan problem.”

He hoped the ongoing Afghan intra-talks in Doha would help establish lasting peace and stability in the country, devastated by almost two decades of war.

Tashkent is implementing huge infrastructure projects to facilitate the involvement of Afghanistan in regional economic integration, according to the president.

He particularly referred to the construction of the Surkhan-Puli-Khumri' power transmission line, and the railway network from Mazari-Sharif to ports in the Indian Ocean.

“We need to establish at the UN a permanent committee that will listen to the hopes and aspirations of the Afghan people,” the Uzbek leader proposed.

“The main aim of the committee should be to assist in the economic and social development of Afghanistan," he explained,
