JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The residents of Momand Dara district of eastern Nangarhar province say the government has failed to deliver on its pledges with regard to reconstructioninfo-icon projects in the district.

They say local residents have been protecting the district after driving away insurgents two years back, but the government has turned its back on them.

The residents demand the government increase the strength of uprising forces and provide them with logistic support.

However, provincial officials say a plan has been devised for new year for Momand Dara district and reconstruction projects would be launched there in near future.

Armed insurgents ruled the district for many years until local uprising forces removed them two years ago and since the uprising forces have been keeping security for the town. However, local residents complain the government has been giving no attention to their situation.

Tribal elder Malak Mohammad Jamil Rafiq told Pajhwok that the people of Momand Dara lacked healthcare services, roads and buildings for schools.

He said there were several canals in the district, which had been destroyed in the conflict and needed rehabilitation. He said the provincial government had repeatedly promised to reconstruct the canals, but it failed to deliver on its promises.

Another tribal elder and commander of the uprising forces, Malak Abdul Basir, said the strength of the uprising forces should be increased in order to further improve security situation and protect the district.

He said a fewer number of uprising forces manned each post and resistance becomes hard when the insurgents stage an attack. He said forces manning other posts should come to the aid of under attack tribesmen. He said the uprising forces lacked enough heavy weapons and they should be assisted in this regard.

Momand Dara district chief Mahfooz Khan also confirmed the above mentioned problems and said he had shared these issues with the provincial administration for solution.

He said the uprising forces kept security of the district and they were paid no attention and they could abandon their posts, which would pave the way for a return of the insurgents.

Nangarhar governor’s spokesman Attaullah Khogyani said a new plan had been devised for Momand Dara district under which projects concerning agricultureinfo-icon, reconstruction and others would be executed in the new year.

He said the uprising forces had been previously assistance and there were plans to provide them more assistance and cooperation.
