Peace talks best hope for ending war: Abdullah

Sep 29, 2020 - 15:58

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistaninfo-icon had played a vital role in facilitating the Afghan peace process, the High Council for National Reconciliation chairman acknowledged on Tuesday.

Addressing a conference at the Institute of Strategic Studies in Islamabad, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah said the neighbours had immensely suffered due to terror groups that were still acting as "spoilers".

Radio Pakistan quoted Abdullah as promising that Afghanistaninfo-icon would not let any terror outfit pose a threat to any country.

Ongoing peace parleys between the Afghan government and the Talibaninfo-icon in the capital of Qatar represented an important opportunity, he acknowledged.

The negotiations offered “the best hope to put the war behind us", he said, adding Kabulinfo-icon’s negotiating team had been directed to demonstrate patience and flexibility.

Pakistan and Afghanistan were faced with common threats and challenges, including terrorism, extremism, intolerance and, more recently, Covid-19.

Abdullah believed there was untapped potential for cooperation between the two countries on dealing with these challenges and threats.

The HCNR chairman extolled Pakistan for hosting millions of Afghan refugees. He said Kabul shared Islamabad's view on their dignified return.
