GARDEZ (Pajhwok): A Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon delegation has arrived in southeastern Paktia province to assess the security situation after growing complaints from local residents.

Ibrahim Ghashtali, a member of the delegation and a lawmaker from Paktia province, said recent incidents of insecurity and targeted killings in the province had worried people and needed to be investigated. He said the visiting delegation would conduct multi-dimensional inspection of these incidents.

“The security situation in Paktia is not satisfactory, roads to six districts are closed and the Talibaninfo-icon run check-points in daylight. The security situation in Gardez is also instable.”

Naseb Muqbil, another Wolesi Jirga member, said a road connecting six districts remained closed for the past six months and people faced immense troubles as a result.

“The security situation is deteriorating with each passing day and we came here after increasing complaints,” he said.

Abdul Malik Zazai, the Provincial Council head, accused negligence personnel of not taking security issues seriously due to which the security situation was bad.

He said during a joint meeting he urged the provincial administration to invite a Wolesi Jirga delegation to assess the security situation closely.

Paktia Governor Mohammad Haleem Fidai acknowledged the growing insecurity in the province and added the issue had been shared with the centre.

“We are very careful due to the ongoing peace efforts and we have talked to people regarding the reopening of roads and some development has been made,” he said.
