Opponents assemble to prevent Najib’s anniversary

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Supporters of jihadi and Islamic political parties and some civil societyinfo-icon activist on Thursday assembled in front of the Loya Jirgainfo-icon hall to prevent the commemorating event of former President Najibullah.

The previous planned event to observe Najibullah’s 24th death anniversary was cancelled by the event in the last minute after Jihadi and Islamic parties through a letter expressed their opposition to the event and asked the government not allow such things to happen.

On early Thursday morning around 2,000 supporters of jihadi parties and civil society activists gathered in front of the Loya Jirga hall in Kabul to prevent the organization of the event but Najibullah’s supporters did not appear in the area.

They chanted slogans --- death to communism, death to Lalai and death to Ayubi. The protesters said that Khalq Democratic Party was the real cause of the past 40 years of conflict in the country.

Mirwais Ameer, also known as Commander Ashraf, who heads Hezb-i-Islamiinfo-icon Afghanistaninfo-icon Maidan Wardak chapter, said all Islamic parties and Mujahideeninfo-icon had come together to prevent the commemoration of former communist regime president Najibullah’s death anniversary.

Ahmad Fahim Kohistani, representative of the Dawat-i-Islami party, said that no one would be allowed to observe the anniversary of a man who killed millions of Afghans.

“Mujahideen announced a general amnesty for all Khalq and Parcham supporters so they can regret their past, but they again tried to reopen their past philosophy,” he said.

Former President Najibullah was a pro-communist activist in his youth, later he became head of the then Afghan intelligence agency known as Khad which was under the direct influence of Soviet Union.

Najib is accused of killing many innocent Afghans and his political rivals during his service ansKhad Chief. He was the last leader of communist era in Afghanistan and was killed by the Talibaninfo-icon when the group succeeded to reach Kabul.
