KABUL): British Prime Minister David Cameron, who flew into Islamabad from Kabul on Saturday evening, met with President Asif Ali Zardari at the Presidency, an official said.

Presidential spokesperson Farhatullah Babar told reporters after the meeting the two leaders conferred on bilateral cooperation in different fields, with focus on economic links and the overall regional situation.

Babar said the Afghan-led peace process and withdrawal of NATO by the end of 2014 figured prominently at the meeting.

Zardari reaffirmed Pakistan‘s strong support for efforts at bringing stability to the neighbouring country, promising continued cooperation with endeavours to bring lasting peace to the war-torn country.

“Pakistan all along has maintained a constructive approach and believes dialogue and reconciliation was the only way forward in Afghanistan,” the president told the British prime minister.

While welcoming the campaign for putting a negotiated end to the long-drawn conflict in Afghanistan, he hoped genuine efforts would be made to take into account legitimate concerns of all stakeholders.

According to Babar, Cameron assured Zardari the United Kingdom would continue cooperation with Pakistan in curbing militancy, trade access to European Union markets and assistance in the fields of investment and education.

The British premier is to meet his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif on the regional situation, with particular reference to the Afghan reconciliation process.

David Cameron, during his first visit after the change of the Pakistani government, would exchange notes with his Sharif on recent developments in Afghanistan.
