No doubt Gulbadin Hekmatyar is popular figure in Afghanistan and his comeback after decades in hiding would definitely have for reaching impact over the political landscape and over all security of Afghanistan in the future.

Hekmatyar like any other leader have a huge number of supporters and with strong and critical opposition. His some characteristics are unique from other leaders such as being hardliner Islamist, never compromise over the freedom and independence of Afghanistan, strong advocate of religion in all walks of life, supporter of women and their rights to vote, peaceful transition of power through free and fair election and many others.

His distinction helped him earn more support and at the same time opposition. His role during civil war is disputed and accused of killing thousands of people but he was not the only leader involved in the civil war but other leaders who enjoyed power, comfortable living and became owner of properties and assets in the last 15 years, the wealth they in the past did not have.

Impact on politics:

Hekmatyar’s principles of politics remained firm and constant most of the time he dubbed former Soviet Union as invader and fought against them and in the same manner he declared Jihad against the US led military invasion of Afghanistan, but some leader had changed their polices and termed the US friend of Afghanistan and joined the Hamid Karzai led government back in 2001.

Karzai now called the US not a trusted friend of Afghanistan and accused Washington of not being sincere in punishing terrorist organisation and bringing peace to Afghanistan, a fact which Hekmatyar always stressed over and warned the Afghans people and leaders regarding it.

Hekmatyar always urged the unity of Afghanistan and demanded and Islamic government being established across the country in true manner. He is strong critics of the neighboring countries and accused them of betraying to Afghanistan for their own interest.

There are many questions why Hekmatyar was now brought to the scene and a landmark agreement was finally reached in countries which mostly rely over US aid and security and economic assistance from western countries.

Hekmatyar launched talks with Afghan government during Karzai regime and at the end he showed flexibility in one point which was the withdrawal of foreign troops and that was the key to the success of talks between government and Hizb-i-Islami Afghanistan (HIA).

Hekmatyar’s come back is considered a positive step across the country and every political leader showed his agreement with HIA to join the peace process and play active politics in the country.

The HIA leader himself offered a hand of brotherhood and friendship to all his opponent and urged a single bullet should not be fired in struggle for power and power transition in the country.

His first press conference was hopeful and people may keep their finger across to see Hekmayar play a positive in the political landscape of the country.

Security:

He called on Taliban again and again to join peace process and renounce violence. Hekmatyar warned them no group in Afghanistan could establish the government by force and could not impose their style of government on others.

His direct and strong words for Taliban showed that Hekmatyar wants the security situation of the country to improve and seeks an opportunity for the Afghans to resolve their disputes and live a peaceful life.

HIA active presence in the country is going to have positive impact over the security situation of the country but 100 percent stability and calm would be difficult.

The Afghan conflict is decades old and it would take time to be resolved and sudden change in the security environment would be unfair to be expected from HIA because the group was part of armed opposition just months before and it would need time to regroup itself and play active role in the stability and security of the country in true means.
