Mar 31, 2016 - 19:20

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Police have detained 21 people on terrorism and other criminal charges in western Herat province, an official said on Thursday.

Provincial police chief Maj. Gen. Abdul Majeed Rozi told a news conference the 21 individuals had been detained during the past 10 days for allegedly planting bombs, kidnappings, armed robberies and trafficking illegal weapons.

He said the detainees included a Talibaninfo-icon commander, Qari Omaid, accused of killing a number of residents and police officers in Herat.

The police chief said police had also defused a number of landmines during their operations.

Eleven military uniforms and some explosives had been recovered from the detainees, Rozi claimed, adding Herat police were decisively fighting against all kind of criminals.

Few days ago, a number of moneychangers, victims of armed robberies, recently staged a protest rally in front of the governor’s house and asked the government to investigate their cases.

However, Rozi said five people, including the guard of the moneychangers’ market and the owner of the market had been arrested.

Feroz Ahmad, a resident of Herat city, said police used to release criminals after detaining them for a few days.
