Nimroz growers happy with melon, watermelon yield

Nimroz growers happy with melon, watermelon yield

Aug 06, 2019 - 15:51

ZARANJ (Pajhwok):  Agricultureinfo-icon officials in southwestern Nimroz province say the yield of melon and watermelon reached 1.5 million tonnes this year, showing a considerable increase.

Agriculture Director Mohammad Akbar Sharifi told Pajhwok Afghan News around 315,000 tonnes of watermelon and 551,000 tonnes of melon had been produced in the province last year.

But this year, the yield increased several times following rains, which had a positive impact on the production of the fruits.

He said around 30,000 hectares of land were cultivated with melon and watermelon in the province this season.

Most of the watermelon and melon were produced in the Chakhansur district of the province, he said, adding they had asked the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and livestock (MoIA) for facilities to export the fruits.

Farmer satisfaction and concerns

Growers are happy with melon and watermelon yield this year, but they also expressed concern over the lack of cold storage facilities in the province. They urged the government to help them export these two fruits.

Abdul Rashid, a grower from Chakhansur district, told Pajhwok the yield was good due to rains, which had a salubrious effect on the crops.

He added he had collected around 100,000 tonnes of watermelon and melon this year. One kilogram of melon accounts for 12 afghanis and the same quantity of watermelon for five afghani.

Mohammad Akbar, another farmer from the same district, expressed happiness over the good yield and said he had collected nearly 50,000 tonnes of melon and watermelon this year.

He said, “We had received some medicine from the Agriculture Department, which also had a positive impact on the crops.”

A number of other farmers held similar views and urged the authorities concerned to construct cold storage in the province, at the earliest possible.

Meanwhile, agriculture officials said efforts were underway to construct cold storage facilities in the province.
