Women’s rights campaigner loses battle with cancer

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Suraya Parlika, a pioneering womeninfo-icon’s rights campaigner in Afghanistaninfo-icon, has lost her battle with cancer, says a media report. 

The rights defender, whose efforts helped increase the maternity leave from 40 to 180 days in Afghanistan, died in Switzerland at the age of 75.

Several kindergartens were set up at workplaces as a result of Parlika’s campaign, according to Khama Press.

She was jailed in the late 1970s because of her advocating for women’s rights and civil liberties in the country.

Born in the Bagram district of Kabul in 1944, she was founder of the Democratic Women Organisation DWO.  She had also been the resident and secretary-general of the Red Crescent Societyinfo-icon of Afghanistan (1986).

She completed her secondary educationinfo-icon in 1962 at Zarghona High School. In 1966, she obtained a BSc from the Faculty of Economics at the Kabul University.

In 1977, she obtained her Masters in Economics and Bilateral Relationship before being appointed as a teacher at the Kabul University.
