HERAT CITY (PAN): Four insurgents, including a commander, were killed during an operation in the Guzra district of western Herat province on Wednesday, officials said.
At least three women were among 18 civilians wounded in a bombing in the provincial capital, Herat City, the deputy police chief said.
Brig. Gen. Hamidullah Hamidi told Pajhwok Afghan that the militants, led by Faiz Ahmad, were killed during an ISAF airstrike in a remote area of the district.
Mohiuddin Noori, a spokesman for the governor, said another eight fighters were injured in the raid. The rebels’ bodies and ammunition are lying at the scene, according to the official.
A heavy explosion in Herat City wounded 18 civilians, including three women, Gen. Hamidi said, adding the blast was triggered at 3pm by explosives rigged to a bicycle.
Mohammad Rafiq Sherzai, a media officer at the Herat Regional Hospital, confirmed that 18 people were evacuated from the blast site to the hospital. Three women and a traffic police official are among them.
