ASADABAD (PAN): An 18-member group of militants on Tuesday joined the government-led peace process in eastern Kunar province, a senior official said.
The group that was active in Asmar district renounced the insurgency as a result of efforts by intelligence operatives, Governor Fazlullah Wahidi told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said the High Peace Council was providing basic facilities for the people quitting violence.
Islamuddin, the group leader, said: “I have been in touch with the militants for nine years. “Now I have realised there is no point in fighting.” He promised efforts at convincing his associates into joining the reconciliation drive.
