MAIMANA (PAN): Four Afghan Local Police (ALP) members were killed and three others wounded an in insurgent attack in the Garziwan district of northwestern Faryab province, an official said on Thursday.

The assault took place on Wednesday night when a group of Taliban stormed an ALP post in the Kikak area of the district, the town’s administrative chief, Abdul Razzaq Kakar, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the militants planned to storm the district centre, but Afghan security forces beat them back. However, he expressed his concern about the incident that occurred a kilometer from the district centre.

Kakar said the 60 police personnel deployed to the district found it impossible to maintain security there. The official called for increasing the number of security personnel in the town.

Ghulam Sakhi, a member of the provincial council and resident of the area, accused ALP members of neglect and incompetence. He said Garziwan would be an unstable district if officials did not heed its security needs.

Meanwhile, Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf claimed the fighters had killed three ALP members and wounded a commander in two separate attacks on police posts in the district.
