KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Two police commanders, including the Maiwand district police chief and the third police district chief in Kandahar City, have been removed from their positions for negligence and dereliction of duty, the governor’s house said on Saturday.
The Maiwand police chief, Asmatullah, was fired a day earlier, a week later insurgents torched two logistics carrying vehicles in the Khaki Chopan area, a statement issued from the governor’s office said.
It said Asmatullah sent a police party to the Khaki Chopan area for an operation without assessing the situation and as a result two policemen were killed by roadside bombs planted by the insurgents.
The statement said it was his negligence that led to the martyrdom of the two policemen. Asmatullah has been removed and detained and being interrogated for the incident.
The third district police chief has been sacked on similar charges. The governor’s house said the official was on duty when the Taliban attacked a police post in the limits of the police district, killing two policemen and injuring four others. Civilians also suffered casualties during the attack.
The two officials have been replaced, the statement concluded.
