MAIMANA (PAN): Two militants were killed and several others injured when Afghan security forces retook control of the Shakh bazaar in the Qaisar district of northwestern Faryab province, official said Monday.
Earlier, the militants briefly gained control the bazaar, prompting security forces to retake the locality and purge it of insurgents.
Abdul Jameel Saddiqi, the Qaisar district chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News the rebels had captured the bazaar last evening, but the government’s writ was reestablished after a successful operation at midnight.
Two fighters, including a close associate of Abdul Ghani Taimani, the Taliban-designated commander for the district, were killed, he added.
Provincial police chief, Maj. Gen. Nabi Jan Mulakhail alleged that locals had looted some belongings of an NGO called ACTED. The Taliban were given a tough time during the brief fight.
He had no report of casualties, but sources said locals escaped unhurt during the clash. The bazaar borders Ghor and Badghis provinces.
