ISLAMABAD (PAN‘s troubled northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Wednesday, officials said.
The incident in Upper Dir district took place when about 100 insurgents attacked a security post, residents said. The dead included seven attackers, a policeman and three civilians, local official Mufariq Shah said.
More than 300 fighters, laced with heavy weapons, clashed with the security personnel, resident Idrees said. The fight that began in the morning stretched into the afternoon, he added.
Pakistani media reported that some 200 militants streamed over the border from Afghanistan and attacked a nearby Pakistani checkpoint on Wednesday, killing at least five security men.
Citing police sources, reports said Wednesday’s attack began around noon. A shootout was still ongoing an hour later in Shaltalo town, which borders Afghanistan’s Kunar province.
