WASHINGTON (PAN’s political office in Doha, as part of peace negotiations with the Afghan government, the United States said on Monday.
“I can’t speak to any messages that might have gone, but you saw in the context of the visit of President Karzai here that he is now open to having a Taliban office in Doha which would provide a venue for discussions with the High Peace Council,” a State Department spokesperson said.
Victoria Nuland told reporters at her daily news conference: “There’s more work that needs to be done before that office can be opened, but those conversations are continuing, obviously, and we continue to support Afghan-Afghan conversations towards reconciliation.”
On upcoming talks in Kabul officials would respond..
“Generally, when we do these things; nothing is agreed until everything is agreed. So I don’t think it behooves us to talk publicly about the elements. But I think the two presidents made clear that, obviously, the status of US troops and the immunity requirements that we have all over the world are certainly a vital issue for us when the deal is complete,” she remarked.
