KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Eight people were killed after a fierce gun-battle broke out between local police and armed insurgents who attacked a security post in Maiwand district of southern Kandahar province, an official said on Sunday.
The policemen and some local boys were attending a fair at the check post when they were attacked by the rebels on Saturday, the governor’s spokesman told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Javed Faisal said two boys and one policeman were killed in the assault and five assailants were killed when the police returned fire.
A Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, however, claimed 12 local policemen were killed in the attack that also resulted into the death of three fighters.
