ISLAMABAD (PANinfo-icon): At least 23 Pakistani soldiers were killed on Saturday when their coach plunged into the Indus River on the main Pakistaninfo-icon-China highway in the mountainous northern region of Gilgit, officials said.

Four more soldiers belonging to a battalion of the Northern Light Infantry (NLI) were injured in the accident that took place on the Karakoram Highway in Kohistan district.

The Pakistani military said 27 people, including 25 soldiers, a civilian driver and a cleaner, were on board the bus proceeding from Swat to Gilgit.

A local administration official said they had dispatched teams to the remote site. The incident happened near Summer Nullah while the driver was negotiating a sharp turn. He lost control of the vehicle which fell into a deep ravine.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said 23 army personnel and two civilians were killed in the accident.
