ISLAMABAD (PAN’s role and sacrifices in the war on terror, with both sides stressing the imperative of regional stability.
Led by Senator Joe Donnelly, the team held talks with Pakistan’s Defence Secretary Lt. Gen. (R) Asif Yasin Malik in the garrison town of Rawalpindi on Wednesday, the army said.
Also attended by US Ambassador Richard Olson, the meeting focused on matters relating to regional security. Both sides emphasised on improving security environment border.
The Inter-Services Public Relations said Gen. Malik stressed the importance of smooth transition in Afghanistan, urging joint efforts to support reconciliation, capacity building and necessary support successful transition of power and security.
While commending Pakistan’s support for the war against terror, Donnelly also paid tribute to the spirit of sacrifice of the armed forces. Both sides agreed on the need to improve the security environment.
The meeting came hours before two Pakistani officials at a security check-post in the Mohmand tribal region were injured as a result of cross-border fire from Afghanistan.
Local TV channels reported the fire started around 9pm and continued for two hours. The Pakistan Army fired back in retaliation, Express News said, adding the incident was under investigation.
