May 29, 2013 - 12:21

MAIMANA (PANinfo-icon): Four local policemen joined the Talibaninfo-icon and a fighter was killed during a clash with security personnel in the northern province of Faryab, officials said on Wednesday.

The Afghan Local Police (ALP) members also surrendered their weapons to the insurgents in the Khwaja Kanti area of Qaisar district.

Another six ALP members who refused to join the militants fled the area, the provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Nabi Jan Mullakhel, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

However, the provincial council secretary from Qaisar district said seven local policemen had turned over 10 Kalashnikov assault rifles to the Taliban.

The ALP checkpoint commander, Hafizullah, was beaten by the policemen after he opposed their move to surrender to the Taliban.

One fighter was killed and a second wounded during a clash with security personnel on Tuesday evening when a group of insurgents attacked a police checkpoint in the Ghar Tepa area of Pakhtunkot district, said border police commander, Gen. Ghayasuddin Khalilzai.
