LASHKARGAH (PAN): Up to 18 militants were killed during a bomb explosion and clashes with police in southern Helmand province, officials said on Monday.

The blast that took place in Dizor area of Musa Qala district on Sunday night left seven militants killed, the governor’s spokesman, Omar Zwak, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Another 11 militants were killed in a clash with police in the Shawal area of Nad Ali district, he said. One policeman was also killed in the firefight.

Zwak said the rebels wanted to attack a security check-post in the area, but police, who received prior information about the plan, preempted the plan.

He also said three civilians sustained injuries in a roadside bombing in Karez area of Marja district on Monday night, where three policemen were also injured during a clash with militants.

A Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed the fighters destroyed two police posts in Shawal area of Nad Ali, killing 18 policemen.
