HERAT CITY (PAN): Hundreds of small and heavy arms have been handed over to the Disbandment of Illegal Armed Groups (DIAG) in western Herat province, an official said on Monday.

Provincial police chief, Maj. Gen. Samiullah Qatra, told Pajhwok Afghan News about 1,000 weapons collected from 10 private security companies during the current solar year.

With most of the arms distributed to Public Order Police personnel, 217 were surrendered to DIAG, he said, adding private security companies had been dissolved with the collection of weapons collected from them.

Public Order Police Commander Lt. Col. Abdul Hameed said the force efficiency had considerably improved after the private security companies were disbanded.

Last year, President Hamid Karzai ordered the disbandment of the private firms that were providing security for foreign forces’ supplies. After the companies were dissolved, the Ministry of Interior created a special protection unit.
