Time needed to decide post-2014 troop levels

Jun 05, 2013 - 00:15

BRUSSELS (PANinfo-icon): The top US and NATOinfo-icon commander in Afghanistaninfo-icon on Tuesday ruled out an early decision on the specific number of international troops that would stay in the country post 2014.

On the sidelines of a two-day NATO meeting here, ISAFinfo-icon Commander Gen. Joseph Dunford told journlists that he needed more to judge Afghanistan's security and political environmentinfo-icon this summer and fall.

The defence ministers might further explain the nature of the future mission and suggest which countries would keep their forces in Afghanistan after the end to the combat mission in 2014, he said.

"I'm certainly not prepared today to tell you exactly what we'll need post 2014," the Marine general remarked, suggesting the decision would come up to eight months later,

At the moment, Dunford believed, there was no urgent need for defining troop levels. Afghan security personnel were capable of assuming the lead for security across their country this year and ensuring security for presidential and provincial council elections in 2014, the general said.
